Members of Mwingi Green Ambassadors are cognisant of the role played by nature as the primary anchor of all lives. The intrinsic empathy towards the environment among members manifests in sustained biodiversity restoration endeavours that are premised on planting and raising indigenous tree species that are well suited to Mwingi region’s semi-arid ecological conditions.
The entire undertaking aims to bring back the once thriving and lush woodlands that have been depleted through decades of indiscriminate clearance of natural vegetation to pave way for farmlands and to feed the retrogressive charcoal enterprise.
Further, Mwingi Green Ambassadors is earnestly deliberate about maintaining the health of the soil through interventions that effectively address soil erosion. Construction of gabions across gullies, planting of grass on bare land and tree growing are central to the
organization’s climate action framework.
To avail adequate numbers of affordable saplings every rainy season, Mwingi Green Ambassadors has rolled out the Green School Initiative. This is a partnership between the organisation and schools that have adequate water supply. These schools host tree nurseries to feed their internal demand and support broader community restoration efforts.
The Green Schools Initiative focuses on supporting institutions of learning, especially those without access to water. One tree nursery at a host school supplies saplings to at least five dependent institutions and their surrounding communities every rainy season. The initiative is anchored on robust and vibrant school environmental clubs headed by matrons and patrons seconded as liaison officers by their respective schools to Mwingi Green Ambassadors.
The tree-growing philosophy adopted emphasizes the number of trees that survive, as opposed to the traditional approach that focuses merely on the placement of saplings in planting holes and their subsequent abandonment.
‘Cool the Planet’ is Mwingi Green Ambassadors’ flagship campaign aimed at mobilizing resident communities to increase the number of trees per household and attain green villages.
The campaign seeks to significantly reduce the atmospheric carbon dioxide, the major greenhouse gas responsible for skyrocketing temperatures.
The campaign is built on the understanding that the fight against global warming is both individualistic and collective.
