Mwingi region as a whole is amongst the poorest places in Kenya. The current available data from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics places 58% of Mwingi Central population below the poverty line.This mark is 16% higher than the national average which stands at 42%.In Mwingi North, 37.3 % of the population is in extreme poverty. Mwingi West accounts for 19.2% of persons afflicted with extreme poverty. In addition to this, Mwingi is one of the most unequal societies whereby approximately 30% of households are female-headed. Child-headed families resulting from factors like HIV/ AIDS, extreme poverty and high mortality rate among adults account for 4.5%.Kitui County where Mwingi region is domiciled, has 86% of its population living in the rural areas.

 

To address the aforementioned disparities, Mwingi Green Ambassadors leads from the front by championing programs that boost farmer incomes,hence cushioning them against the harsh effects of the hostile environment. The organization continues to equip farmers to undertake apiculture, rearing of improved breeds of chicken and goats, as well as adopting kitchen gardens.

The climatic conditions favour bee keeping. The region is well-known for its first grade honey. Moreover the Galla goat breed has been adopted due to its excellent milk yields

,faster weight gain and it’s ability to feed on the local natural vegetation.It has also demonstrated high twinning traits,thus growing the farmers’ stock relatively faster.
