Mwingi Green Ambassadors is a community-based organisation operating in Kitui County under registration certificate number DSD/15/69/02/19321. The organisation’s area of focus comprises of the three constituencies of Mwingi North, Mwingi Central and Mwingi West. The organisation works in partnership with local communities to address their shared challenges. One of the outstanding concerns identified was the continuous destruction of the limited natural ecosystems, given that Mwingi in its entirety is arid and semi-arid. Residents were increasingly subjecting the environment to unsustainable exploitation. Resources such as forests, water catchment areas and soil were being degraded at alarming rates. Indiscriminate tree felling to support the charcoal business significantly reduced overall tree cover. Forest destruction further contributed to erratic rainfall patterns, with diminishing rainfall amounts. Hunger and real starvation are still synonymous with Mwingi.
In pursuit of these objectives, Mwingi Green Ambassadors operated as a closely knit congregation of like-minded friends until 13th June 2024, when the group attained formal registration as a Community-Based Organization (CBO) under certificate number DSD/15/69/02/19321.
