Mwingi region is amongst the poorest places in Kenya. Available data from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics places 58% of Mwingi Central population below the poverty line — 16% higher than the national average of 42%.
To address these disparities, Mwingi Green Ambassadors champions programs that boost farmer incomes, cushioning them against the harsh effects of the hostile environment. The organization equips farmers in apiculture, rearing of improved breeds of chicken and goats and kitchen gardens.
The climatic conditions favour bee keeping — the region is well-known for its first-grade honey. The Galla goat breed has been adopted due to its excellent milk yields, faster weight gain and ability to feed on local natural vegetation.
