In September 2021, a group of young and visionary individuals united by the desire for a better Mwingi came together. With members drawn from the three Mwingi constituencies, a methodical cross-sectoral analysis of the region's challenges was carried out.
One of the outstanding concerns identified was the continuous destruction of the limited natural ecosystems, given that Mwingi in its entirety is arid and semi-arid. Residents were increasingly subjecting the environment to unsustainable exploitation. Resources such as forests, water catchment areas and soil were being degraded at alarming rates.
With nature thrown off balance, communities began oscillating between climatic extremes. Prolonged droughts were frequently succeeded by destructive floods, leaving farmers counting losses. It is against this backdrop that members, at a meeting held on 28th December 2022, resolved to lobby Mwingi communities to take action.
In pursuit of these objectives, Mwingi Green Ambassadors operated as a closely knit congregation of like-minded friends until 13th June 2024, when the group attained formal registration as a Community-Based Organization (CBO) under certificate number DSD/15/69/02/19321.
